Statement by Distilled Spirits Council President and CEO Chris Swonger
on Today’s EU and U.S. Trade Discussions in Brussels
“Today’s U.S.–EU meetings are a promising sign of both governments’ commitment to work together to finalize a fair trade framework. Distillers across the Atlantic welcome this momentum. Restoring permanent zero-for-zero tariffs for U.S. and EU spirits, many of which can only be produced in their country of origin, would not only strengthen U.S. hospitality businesses but also ease cost pressures for U.S. consumers. At a time when affordability is top of mind, especially during the holiday season, removing the 15% tariff on EU spirits would bring welcome relief to U.S. consumers and support U.S. restaurants, bars and retailers.”
