Initiative honors the enduring role of distilled spirits in American history and culture

As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) today announced the launch of Spirit Forward, a multi‑channel campaign celebrating distilled spirits’ deep roots in American history and their continued impact on culture, hospitality, craftsmanship and community.

Timed to coincide with Patriots’ Day, commemorating the opening chapter of the American Revolutionary War, Spirit Forward reflects the same independent and entrepreneurial spirit that helped shape a new nation.

“Long before America had a constitution, it had distilleries and taverns, places where people gathered, exchanged ideas and found fellowship,” said Distilled Spirits Council President & CEO Chris Swonger. “Our Spirit Forward campaign is about honoring the spirits industry’s past and toasting to its future. This is a celebration of a unique and vibrant industry that, for more than two and a half centuries, has continued to evolve, innovate and bring people together.”

The campaign, which aims to connect the industry’s early foundations to its modern relevance and future momentum, launched with a flagship Spirit Forward video filmed at the historic Water Wheel Tavern in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. A split-screen narrative pairs Revolutionary Era reenactors with modern‑day hospitality professionals and spirits enthusiasts. The video illustrates how, from colonial taverns to today’s bars and restaurants, spirits have long fostered connection, conversation and creativity.

The video, boosted by targeted advertising, is part of a broader digital and social media campaign across DISCUS platforms, reinforcing the message among adult consumers, media and policy makers that distilled spirits have been woven into America’s story since its beginning.

The campaign also features a dedicated webpage where spirits enthusiasts can explore:

  • A timeline, tracing key moments in the spirits industry from colonial America to today
  • Historic recipes, including Fish House Punch and Martha Washington’s Rum Punch
  • A spotlight on George Washington’s Distillery at Mount Vernon, highlighting the first president’s role as one of America’s earliest and most successful distillers, alongside quotes reflecting his appreciation for spirits and moderation, and a rare letter written by Washington discussing the strong demand for his whiskey
  • Destination Distillery, showcasing distilleries across the country, from historic sites and small craft producers to iconic legacy distilleries
